Cushion. The Curry for is cushioned by full length EVA foam, while this is not anything new or exciting does do a solid job in providing adequate cushioning, bounce while being responsive enough for accelerated on-court actions. We found it to perform very similar to the previous model if not somewhat softer, while still being firm enough to give you some lift.
Traction & Grip. The traction is made-up of a deep grooved square type pattern running along the translucent sole, a black rubber square stands-out from under the forefoot which felt slightly firmer. This pattern shape and design is something new, but how did it perform?
On the indoor court – the grip and response was solid, nothing more. I did find myself wiping the sole every 5 minutes or so which is normal for many translucent soles. In my experience, the stopping force of the shoe was average, say on a jump stop I did feel some slippage at times. We did not test the shoes outdoors, however given the black rubber pad is of a harder rubber I expect them to perform pretty outdoors.
Fit & Size. We tried on a pair of size 10 shoes in game conditions, I have a normal arch with a slightly wide forefoot and my first impressions while walking around pre-game were good. I laced them-up and within minutes I could feel the TPU arch support slightly compressing into my foot.
The shoe fit itself was pretty damn good considering its lightweight construction. My toes were evenly spaced, I felt locked-in to the shoe, however the heel support was lacking which didn’t quite cup and gold the heel as much as I expected. By halftime the arch support was pressing into my foot which I could bare and run out the game but it did get somewhat annoying for me.
Containment. I found the combination for the Anafoam and knit to work pretty well, the lace loop system produced and decent locked-in feeling around the fore foot and arch areas, however in my experience the heel slippage was notable.
The shoe’s upper is constructed with a full length knit with an Anafoam overlay. The Anafoam addition was a thumbs-up for us – it is soft, durable and lightweight and would gently hug and cushion the forefoot and heel areas.
The knitted internal sock is more of a compression sleeve it fit and form to the shape of your foot. We felt the material used in this model is better than the UA Curry 4’s, the breath-ability and combination of the Anafoam and knit was excellent with no overheating around the foot felt.
The design team are on-point with the overall look and feel of the Curry 5 and in my opinion is the best looking shoe bearing Steph’s name to date. While not loaded with any innovative tech or design elements, we did liked combination of the Anafoam and full knit upper and believe this is something the brand can build upon.
The construction has been well balanced and thought-out producing a stable, response and cushioned performance basketball shoe that is very light and reactive to most on-curt movements. We found the heel slightly on the loose side, not everyone will notice this as the shoe does incorporate two plastic winglets to help centralize the foot while underway.
Overall, I felt the Under Armour Curry 5 has gained some ground over its predeceases in some areas while in other remained the same. The fit is not for everyone and it is recommended that you be fitted for these shoes before purchasing.
